broken window coverings

Window coverings last a long time, but how do you know when it’s time to replace your old ones and upgrade to custom treatments? You can spruce up your home with fresh paint, new furniture and more, so why not add in new blinds? Here’s what to look for in your old window coverings to know they’ve reached their end.

Your Window Coverings’ Ease Of Use

Blinds can become hard to open or close and you may put more effort into simply drawing them up. This means the opening mechanisms are likely damaged. What good are window coverings if opening and closing them is too much of a hassle? And any bit of difficulty only gets worse over time. Once when opening mechanism breaks down, the rest will be sure to follow.

General Aesthetics And Appearance

Have you recently updated your home? A newly painted room or an updated furniture style might be at odds with your existing window treatments. If you drastically change up your home’s appearance, you may find that you need new colors and styles of shades to match.

Window Coverings State Of Disrepair

Broken, bent or cracked slats, a broken or frayed pull cord, discoloration of your window treatments and more can be the biggest reason for a replacement. If you’ve had your existing window coverings for years, they’ve had a lot of wear and tear. One or two breakages may be easy to overlook, but it often snowballs from there.

While shades aren’t as susceptible to the same amount of intense damage as bilnds they do fade and suffer from noticeable fraying. Splitting seams and tearing edges often mean more serious problems, too, like sagging fabric and loss of shape.

Letting Light In

Are you noticing gaps when you close your blinds? Properly working blinds should be able to tilt and adjust as needed, to partially block light or close up tight. If you’re having trouble getting your slats to stay put where you want them, or light being let in when everything should be closed, it’s probably time to get new window coverings. It’s likely that their tilt mechanism is damaged or the slats themselves are broken, both of which are hard to match right and replace. Getting a new set of blinds is easier, faster and tends to cost about the same.

Make an appointment today to replace your own worn-out window coverings.
