Any Season, Any Time: Why You Need Cellular Shades
November 16, 2023There are so many types of window coverings out there! When you’re shopping for your next treatments, you’re likely to look at blinds, shutters, curtains, and shades. But what’s the big difference between them? And which style is actually right for you?
Blinds vs. Shades
One of the most common types of window coverings is blinds. These slatted treatments can be partially opened to let in as much or as little light as you like. This makes them pretty ubiquitous and a utilitarian option. While most blinds tend to be horizontal, vertical blinds are also an option and they work well to elongate windows.
Shades are somewhat similar to blinds in that they can be retracted or rolled up. However, they don’t have the signature slats of blinds. Instead, they are made of single pieces of material rather. There is a little less control over the amount of light you let in, but the look they create is very seamless. Shades can also be rolled up only partway, still allowing for some control over the amount of light let in
Shutters vs. Curtains
Curtains are often used as a finishing touch in conjunction with blinds. But they can stand on their own as window coverings, too! Long, draped pieces of fabric tie off to the side to let in light and, when closed at night, do an excellent job of trapping in the warmth of coolness of the house. They also add an elegant flair to any room.
Shutters stand out from the pack as they are custom built-in treatments. Made from wood or modern composites, they have slats similar to blinds but are much thicker and are installed directly into the house. More than a window covering, they are a feature.
The Right Window Coverings For Different Rooms
There are multiple options for window coverings for a reason: there’s no one-size-fits-all. Different rooms have different styles, different needs for letting in/blocking out light, different metrics for cleaning, and more. Don’t be afraid to use more than one style throughout your home as you like!
