What To Ask When Buying New Blinds
August 13, 2024Considering Wood-Alternative Blinds? What To Know
September 19, 2024Window coverings can last you for a long time, but eventually, they need to be replaced. But how can you be sure it’s the right time to replace – and even upgrade – your treatments? You don’t want to pull the trigger too soon, but you also don’t want to wait until you’re backed into a blinds-inspired corner. Here are three important questions to ask yourself.
Do Your Window Coverings Still Work?
Blinds can become hard to open or close. You may find you have to put more effort into pulling to draw them up. This means the opening mechanisms are likely damaged. Do you find yourself keeping your coverings either fully shut or fully open the entire day? After all, what good are window treatments if it’s too much work to use them? And any bit of difficulty only gets worse over time.
Do They Still Look Good?
Aesthetics are important. Do your window coverings show signs of wear and tear? Do they maybe operate OK but have a dingy look to them? Or perhaps you recently redecorated your house – do your shades and curtains still match your new aesthetic? Your style is ever-evolving and a mismatched set of coverings can stick out like a sore thumb.
Or Are They Starting To Show Wear And Tear?
Broken, bent or cracked slats, a broken or frayed pull cord, discoloration of your window treatments, and more can be the biggest reason for a replacement. If you’ve had your existing window coverings for years, they’ve had a lot of wear and tear. One or two breakages may be easy to overlook, but it often snowballs from there.
While shades aren’t as susceptible to the same amount of intense damage as bilnds are, they do fade and suffer from noticeable fraying. Splitting seams and tearing edges often mean more serious problems, too, like sagging fabric and loss of shape.
Or maybe you’re noticing gaps when you close your blinds. Properly working blinds should be able to tilt and adjust as needed, to partially block light or close up tight. If you’re having trouble getting your slats to stay put where you want them, or light being let in when everything should be closed, it’s probably time to get new window treatments.
